Percutaneous hallux valgus correction

What is a percutaneous hallux valgus correction?

A percutaneous hallux valgus correction is a minimally invasive surgical technique that corrects the misalignment of the big toe through small incisions in the skin.

The surgeon uses special instruments to work on the bone through the skin and then fix it with small screws.

The goal is to minimize damage to the joint and expedite recovery.

Symptoms

Many people with hallux valgus experience pain on the inside of the foot.

The bump (bunion) can be red and irritated, especially in tight shoes.

Sometimes the bursa becomes inflamed, making the bump even more painful.

Hallux valgus is common and is a troublesome, painful condition that is often also perceived as aesthetically disturbing.

Treatment

Non-surgical

The first attempt is to reduce symptoms by adjusting shoes and possibly wearing orthotics.

Percutaneous surgery

When symptoms persist or worsen, the surgeon may suggest a percutaneous hallux valgus correction.

In this minimally invasive procedure, the big toe is straightened through small incisions and fixed with internal screws.

Because this is done minimally invasively, people often experience less pain after the operation and the toe often remains more flexible.

The operation is often performed under local anesthesia.

Rehabilitation

After the operation, you can go home the same day.

Because only small incisions are needed, there is often less pain and recovery is usually faster than with open surgery.

Crutches are not necessary; you can walk with a special shoe.

For the first two weeks, it’s important to rest a lot with your leg elevated to reduce swelling. After that, you can walk around indoors with the special shoe.

After about six weeks, you can wear normal shoes again and gradually resume your daily activities.

The foot may still be somewhat swollen up to 3 months after the operation.
