Muscle-sparing hip replacement

What is a muscle-sparing hip prosthesis?

A muscle-sparing hip replacement is a modern technique where the surgeon accesses the hip joint through natural openings between the muscles.

This means that the important muscles around the hip do not need to be detached, resulting in smoother recovery and less pain after surgery.

Symptoms

Hip complaints due to wear and tear (arthrosis) or other conditions usually manifest as pain in the groin and around the hip.

This pain can radiate to the upper leg or buttock and makes everyday activities more difficult.

Walking, climbing stairs, cycling, or even sleeping can become increasingly painful.

Stiffness and reduced range of motion are also common.

Treatment

Initially, we try to treat the symptoms in a non-operative way.

This can be done through painkillers, injections, or physiotherapy.

When these treatments do not provide sufficient improvement, surgery may be considered.

With the muscle-sparing technique, the worn hip joint is replaced by an artificial hip without detaching the muscles. This makes the procedure less invasive and promotes recovery.

Rehabilitation

Because the muscles are preserved with this technique, rehabilitation often proceeds faster.

Many patients can carefully start walking on the day of the procedure or the day after.

Recovery typically progresses smoothly, allowing you to return to daily activities more quickly.

Our team guides you step by step, focusing on pain control, muscle strengthening, and safe movement.

Information

Our department has created a hip brochure. It explains everything you need to know about hip prosthesis and rehabilitation.

A hip newspaper has also been created. You will receive this daily as a patient during your stay.
